Despite being one of the smaller clubs in the region, Henley again managed to be one of just two clubs to field four teams in the Oxfordshire League. In the second half of the winter season, Henley again ‘punched above its weight’ and produced some memorable results.
Henley 1st team lost a few players at the start of the season as Captain Simon Street was injured, number one Rick Weatherall became a father again, regular stalwart Harry Carr resumed his winter skiing career, Nyall Driscoll and Ed Hopkins focused on their final year at university and Stefan Stanton struggled with work commitments. At the half way point, despite their best efforts, Henley lay in bottom place in Oxfordshire’s top division, having only won one match out of seven. However, Captain Street was determined not to allow the team to get relegated and returned from injury prematurely to help out. Street also recruited two new players – Matthew Baynes and Andy Lewis to the club. These additions, together with Weatherall’s return and the consistent performance of Adrian Richmond, paid immediate dividends and Henley beat every team in the league to win 100% of their matches in the second half. This incredible performance enabled them to finish in third place overall, with memorable victories over Abingdon and Wallingford. Notable performances came from Stefan Stanton, who won 5 out of 7 matches, Matthew Baynes who won 6 out of 9 and Adrian Richmond who won 8 out of 11. However, the first team player of the season award went to Rick Weatherall for an amazing 8 out of 9 victories at first string. Despite being 45 years old, Weatherall continues to play to an extremely high standard and only lost to former world top 10 Mark Cairns from Abingdon.
Having been relegated from Division 2 at Christmas, Henley 2nd team had another difficult season and ended up being relegated from Division 3. In a very tight division they managed to secure 5 victories out of 14 – more than the other relegated team that finished above them. With many close matches, even the two promoted teams only managed to secure 9 wins each, so the 2nds can count themselves unlucky to get relegated. The problems came in the first part of the season, as players were needed to support the first team and James Knight was unavailable for Wednesday fixtures. By the end of the first half, the second team had also only won one match against fellow strugglers Park Wheatley and were lying in last place. Whilst the seconds enjoyed a better second half of the season, securing 4 wins from 7, it was not enough to avoid dropping a division. Whenever the team could field its top players – James Knight, Paul Sayers, David Wright, Derek Oswald and Jill Campion – it managed to secure good results. In a difficult season, Captain Roger Booker awarded the player of the season to James Knight, who recorded 3 victories from 4 appearances at first string.
Henley 3rd team had a consistent season and recorded 8 wins and 4 defeats, which resulted in them finishing second in Division 6 and duly promoted to Division 5 next season. Valuable points were picked up at home and away, only losing both fixtures to top of the table Wallingford second team. Henley were particularly pleased with being able to include keen junior players in every round of the matches – players who will no doubt be climbing the ranks of Henley Squash Club in years to come. Jonathan Betts put in some outstanding performances at first string and played beyond his age, with a control and calmness that recorded 4 victories from 5 matches. James Little also returned to the team after a year long lay off due to injury and, although not at his best, managed to win all 3 of his matches. But the stand out player of the season was Richie Hopkins who holds the impressive record of 11 appearances and 10 victories. Richie has power and retrieval skills, and when more craft comes into his game, will be a force to be reckoned with. The juniors were supported by captain Richard Griffiths and Peter Hopkins and other established players. Griffiths also recorded some impressive statistics, winning 9 matches from 11 appearances and his involvement helped secure the well deserved promotion.
Henley 4th team started the season with the simple goal of avoiding the wooden spoon in Division 7! Two victories in the first two weeks even gave some hope that promotion might be a possibility, but then reality set in and only two more wins (plus one walkover) were achieved over the remainder of the season. Nevertheless, the team finished 4th – a definite improvement on the three previous winter seasons, when they finished last or next-to-last each time. Henley were pleased to be able to give vital match experience to a total of 15 players throughout the season. Notable performances were Matt Blagg who won 4 matches from 5 appearances, Kristof Kunzmann with 3 victories from 5 matches, but Team Captain and Club Chairman Duncan Nightingale awarded the player of the season award to Paul Ireland for his 4 victories from 7 appearances.

The junior and adult members of the Henley Squash Club turned out in force last Saturday at the Henley Leisure Centre as part of World Squash Day’s “World 2020 Challenge”.
The focus of the day was to promote squash’s bid to be part of the 2020 Olympics. Despite being played by over 20 million people of all ages throughout the world, squash is currently not included in the Olympics. Globally, over 40,000 players took in the World 2020 Challenge from more than 750 squash clubs in 72 nations from Argentina to Zimbabwe. The scores from each club contributed to a worldwide score between two teams named ‘Team Squash’ and ‘Team 2020′.
World Squash Day organisers hope the total figure of competitors will run into the hundreds of thousands, and enable them to claim the event as the biggest sports fixture in history, as well as the biggest squash match.
Andrew Shelley, Chief Executive of the World Squash Federation, said: “There are over fifty thousand courts spread across the world and to give the players on all of them the chance to compete in the same championship will bring the world of squash together in such a unique way. A day to look forward to, a day that will be remembered!”
UK Co-Ordinator Vicky Clark, from Merseyside, dreamed up the idea of the 2020 Challenge. She said: “We would love to have hundreds of thousands of people taking part all over the world, and especially here in the UK, where the game of squash began. Our aim is to get this event into the Guinness Book of Records, and we hope that kind of response will show a tremendous global support for squash and the Olympic bid.”
At Henley, there was a rolling competition during the day in which juniors and then adults played. Each match was a single game with the winner being the first person to 20 points. Players of all standards took part in the event from juniors who have been playing for less than a year through to a former National Champion! In addition to playing their World 2020 Challenge, the juniors had the energy, stamina and enthusiasm to play additional round-robin matches. Ella Jennings and Beth Ireland were the winners of the two squash round-robins, whilst Jemma Nightingale came top in the Racketball round-robin. The adult matches were keenly fought with a number of close results, most notably a 20-19 victory for Simon Street (playing for ‘Team 2020’) over Adrian Richmond (for ‘Team Squash’).
The overall result from Henley was 10 matches apiece, with Team 2020 just winning the day by 329 points to 325 points.
On Saturday 20th October, Henley Squash Club will be participating in World Squash Day – along with every other Squash Club in the world (well most anyway!) to promote Squash’s bid to be in the 2020 Olympics.
See here for all the details.
If you want to tale part and haven’t signed up yet, send an email to Duncan Nightingale (littlegogs@hotmail.com).
We need to put together two teams of 20 players each (including Juniors) to play each other throughout the day and whose scores will contribute to a worldwide score between the two teams called ‘Team Squash’ (captained by Nick Matthew) and ‘Team 2020’ (captained by James Wilstrop).
The action starts at Henley Leisure Centre at 9.45am on Saturday 20th October with matches in reverse string order, culminating in the match between the two 1st strings. Each match is a single game, point-a-rally, first to 20 points, sudden death at 19-all. Every point of every match counts towards the worldwide total.
Teams larger than 20 players are perfectly OK! So don’t hesitate to sign up and ask friends and family to sign up as well.
Apart from registering that Henley will be taking part, and booking the courts with the Leisure Centre, planning is still at an early stage – so suggestions about how to run the day are most welcome – as are offers to help with the organisation. Simon Street has volunteered to be one of the local captains. Anyone volunteer to be the other?

The Henley Squash League Cup was held on the 14th July. This was the club’s first tournament for some time and a small, but enthusiastic, group of players turned out to compete over 3-4 knockout rounds, with a plate competition for those eliminated in the first round.
The overall winner was our very own bionic woman, Jill Campion, who defeated Jonathan Betts in a very entertaining final. Jonathan had also fought a very tough semi-final, just edging out Roger Booker. The plate final was between Tim Budden and Duncan Nightingale, with Tim the victor despite a bunch of Nightingales supporting from the gallery!
Prizes were awarded by Roger Booker, now suitably showered and dressed after his semi with Jonathan! There was also a number of additional raffled prizes for all entrants.
Much thanks must go to the Betts household: as well as providing a finalist in young Jonathan, dad Roger organised the whole thing and mum Jane provided finger food and refreshments throughout the day!
The club hopes to hold more tournaments in the near future – with tentative plans for a handicapped event as well as an ‘F.A. Cup’-style tournament held over several months.
A new order of Squash Club T-shirts is about to be made. These are available to non-Team players at cost (£20). A full range of sizes from XS to XXL is available.
Let Duncan Nightingale know if you want one.
Henley Squash Club hosted its first ever fun squash tournament for junior and adult players on Sunday. The emphasis was on having fun and encouraging players of all ages and abilities to come together for an afternoon of squash.
It was great to see some adults returning to squash such as Chilli Brener and Huseiyn Djemil, as well as U9 players Beth Ireland, Cameron Parke, Oliver Quinn and Sidni Brener. The 22 players were put into four mixed ability teams, including an all-female team. No fewer than 70 games were played over the 3 hours of frenetic squash with many being closely fought (five ended up 15-14)!
The winning team comprised junior club members Cameron Parke, Freddie Borg and Max Djemil, and adult club members Paul Ireland and Roger Betts. They had a slightly higher average score than the all-female team of Bec Dixon, Beth Ireland, Helen Henshaw and Ruby Borg and adults Chilli Brener and Fiona Dixon.
The tournament was a great success due to the hard work of the organiser Fiona Dixon and the enthusiasm of the players (both young and not so young)!
